Search Engine Results for Small Business
One of the most common questions that owners of small business websites ask is, “How can I get better results on the search engines?” There isn’t a business on the web that doesn’t appreciate the need for continual improvement in the task of achieving favorable search engine results, and most of us acknowledge that the need is big. Many small businesses have discovered some benefit in the use of pay-per-click advertising and regional search features like Google Local. That kind of search marketing is relatively easy to understand, and easily accessible. But organic search - the natural results that are ordered and delivered by the judgment of each search engine itself - often seems out of reach for many small businesses. There are two primary reasons for this. 1) The odds are great. In fact, they appear to be stacked against most small businesses. Consider these odds: - The Internet continues to grow exponentially. Hundreds of thousands of new domain names are registered every day, and the sheer volume of available information is overwhelming and incalculable.
- Competition for desired keywords and phrases is, by extension, also growing at a corresponding rate. Search is fundamentally a competition for language, and growing numbers of businesses are positioning for the same terms.
- Search engines are constantly evolving. The goal of every search engine is to provide relevant results to users. How they determine that relevance is always in flux. It’s hard enough to know what works today, much less what might work 6 months from now.
2) There is a general knowledge gap regarding organic search. In fact, a number of myths about search engines still appear to rule the day. Some people think that search marketing is automatic and instantaneous. Some think that all you need is a few well-chosen keywords in your meta tags. Others admit to not knowing what to think or even what questions to ask. While the odds are big, and useful knowledge is not pervasive, there is a growing trend among small businesses to try to understand and implement the fundamentals of search marketing. Search engine optimization is hard work, and it takes time. The work involves the fundamental practices of good research, content development and distribution, relevant link building, and regular analysis of your web traffic. It takes discipline, commitment, and a high degree of motivation. But with the right combination of knowledge and effort, favorable organic search results ARE possible for small businesses that choose to make it a priority.
